Keynote Speech 1:
Challenges and Prospect of Next-Generation Mobile Communications

5G technology is being applied to the core infrastructure of a wide range of industries, and is utilized to support everything from high-quality communications services to smart factories, vehicle-to-vehicle communication, and a raft of other new services. While 5G commercialization is still in its early stage, both academia and industry are initiating research activities to shape the next-generation communication system, namely 6G. In this talk, I will introduce comprehensive overview of various aspects including technical and societal trends, services, requirements, and candidate technologies for 6G. In 6G era, both humans and machines are the main users and many advanced services will be provided such as truly immersive extended reality, high-fidelity mobile hologram and digital replica. But the new services require a tremendous amount of real-time data processing, a hyper-fast data rate, and extremely low latency and there are key candidate technologies to realize them. Some of the requirements and technologies will be addressed in this talk.

Sunghyun Choi is a Senior Vice President and Head of the Advanced Communications Research Center at Samsung Research, Samsung Electronics, Seoul, Korea. He was a professor at the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Seoul National University (SNU), Seoul, Korea from Sept. 2002 to Aug. 2019, and served as a Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, College of Engineering during the last two years at SNU. He received his B.S. (summa cum laude) and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 1992 and 1994, respectively, and received Ph.D. at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, The University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1999. He is currently heading researches and standardization for 6G, B5G, and IoT connectivity at Samsung Research. He co-authored over 250 technical papers and holds over 160 patents, and numerous patents pending. He has served as a Program Committee Co-Chair of IEEE WCNC 2020, IEEE DySPAN 2018, ACM Multimedia 2007, and IEEE WoWMoM 2007. He has served as an editor of numerous publications including IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing, and IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine. He was named IEEE fellow in 2014.

‘Rebooting Communications’ – A Quantum-Signal Processing Perspective

The marriage of ever-more sophisticated signal processing and wireless communications has led to compelling ‘tele-presence’ solutions – at the touch of a dialling key…

However, the ‘quantum’ leaps both in digital signal processing theory and in its nano-scale based implementation is set to depart from classical physics obeying the well-understood laws revealed by science. We embark on a journey into the weird \& wonderful world of quantum-physics, where the traveller has to obey the sometimes strange new rules of the quantum-world.

Hence we ask the judicious question: can the marriage of applied signal processing and communications extented beyond the classical world into the quantum world?

Lajos Hanzo (, (FIEEE’04) received his Master degree and Doctorate in 1976 and 1983, respectively from the Technical University (TU) of Budapest. He was also awarded the Doctor of Sciences (DSc) degree by the University of Southampton (2004) and Honorary Doctorates by the TU of Budapest (2009) and by the University of Edinburgh (2015). He is a Foreign Member of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences and a former Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Press. He has served several terms as Governor of both IEEE ComSoc and of VTS. He has published 1900+ contributions at IEEE Xplore, 19 Wiley-IEEE Press books and has helped the fast-track career of 123 PhD students. Over 40 of them are Professors at various stages of their careers in academia and many of them are leading scientists in the wireless industry. He is also a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng), of the IET and of EURASIP.

Keynote Speech 3:
Human-Centered AI for a Hyperconnected Post-COVID World
Dr. Yoon Kim

Life in the 2020s will be dominated by hyper-connected things, people and society, and the current pandemic will further accelerate digitalization (e.g., virtual/mixed-reality based communication), creating a plethora of technical challenges and opportunities. In this talk, I will focus on the new (and not so new) human experiences and desire to be digitally connected with other humans and machines, resulting in abundant, new and diverse data provided to AIs through hyper-connected networks and services. I will give examples of such applications and technical challenges, opportunities and threats in this “new normal era” where the line between the physical and digital worlds becomes blurry.

Yoon Kim is currently CTO of SK Telecom. Yoon has been involved in the academic and commercial research and development of machine learning technologies and human-machine interfaces for the past 20 years. Prior to SK Telecom, he served as the Head of Speech Engineering at Apple, leading teams that build on-device and cloud-based speech technologies for Siri and Apple products. Most recently at Apple, he led AI development for AirPods and HomePod. He joined Apple in 2013 through the acquisition of Novauris Technologies, a pioneer in mobile speech recognition technology, where he served as CEO. Prior to Novauris, he led two Silicon Valley startups and was a researcher at SRI International, the incubator of Siri’s original AI technology. Yoon holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University.

Keynote Speech 4:
ICT for Post Covid-19: From Pandemic Resilience to Economic Recovery

Compared with the previous pandemics, the situation is much worse this time. Fortunately now we can deal with it better using digital technology. Broadband connectivity has become essential infrastructure that allows us to continue work and life online. In the healthcare sector, with the help of AI, scientists can better understand virus, develop vaccines and doctors can do better and faster diagnosis.
Digital technology is helping us deal with this crisis much better than before and will also help us AFTER the crisis when we re-launch our economies.
Fighting against the pandemic has come with great economic costs. The World Bank forecasts 5.2 percent contraction in global GDP in 2020, the deepest global recession in decades. And unemployment rate worldwide is at a record high.
How to get back to normal business operations as well as support what is likely to be a fragile economic recovery. Many challenges lie ahead, including:

  1. Containing and reducing infections at near zero level before the vaccine is massively applied.
  2. Restarting and boosting businesses safely to support people life and fight unemployment
  3. Mitigating the loss on some deeply impacted sectors, for example travel and tourism, SMEs, construction, transportation and offline retail.
  4. Utilizing ICT enables faster and safer businesses resumption, by mobilizing digital ecosystem locally towards contactless, cashless, seamless transactions;
  5. Accelerating digital transition by encouraging digital infrastructure investment.


Mr. Edward Zhou is Vice President for Global Public Affairs of Huawei. He is in charge of government’s communications aiming to be the advisor to national governments, contribute to ICT policies and standards formulation in host countries, expand the market for Huawei, and build competitive edges.
Mr. Edward Zhou joined Huawei in 1996 and has over 20 years of experience in the telecom industry and played a key role in many of global milestone projects in Huawei.
Moreover, Mr. Edward Zhou held many senior positions in the company. He worked as Chief Marketing Officer of Huawei Europe, and deeply participated in the development of European telecommunication market. After that he took over the position of Vice President for Huawei Japan which was responsible for solutions and marketing, focusing on Carrier Business. He was leading the collaboration with Softbank, NTT Docomo, SKT and other leading telecom operators in 5G trial and wireless network reconstruction in Japan and Korea.

Keynote Speech 5:
Unleashing the Potential of Tethered Networked Flying Platforms
Prof. Mohamed-Slim Alouini

The new trend in wireless communications is enabling connectivity solutions from the sky. In this context, networked flying platforms (NFPs) including drones, balloons, and high-altitude/medium-altitude/low-altitude platforms (HAPs/MAPs/LAPs) are proposed to act as airborne base-stations (BSs) to offer 5G, beyond 5G (B5G), and 6G services. However, one of the main challenges facing the deployment of these airborne BSs is the limited available energy at the NFPs, which limits their flight and hovering time. In addition, these NFPs require an extra wireless feeder link to connect users to the core network. In this talk, we introduce the potential and advantages of tethered NFPs (t-NFPs) which are connected to a ground station through a tether. The tether provides the t-NFPs with both energy and data making them stay for a longer time in the air in order to essentially offer uninterrupted connectivity. We then discuss how the networks involving t-NFPs can be optimized to increase the efficiency of urban deployments and provide much-needed and better access in remote rural areas. We finally conclude our talk by presenting some research directions for these networks which should eventually offer a very appealing solution as a bridge between fixed base stations and free-flying platforms.

Mohamed-Slim Alouini was born in Tunis, Tunisia. He received the Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Pasadena, CA, USA, in 1998. He served as a faculty member in the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, USA, then in the Texas A&M University at Qatar, Education City, Doha, Qatar before joining King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), Thuwal, Makkah Province, Saudi Arabia as a Professor of Electrical Engineering in 2009. His current research interests include modeling, design, and performance analysis of wireless communication systems.

Keynote Speech 6:
Technology Strategy of ETRI for x + AI

Executive Vice President, Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), Korea
The Republic of Korea has led the growth in its national economy by developing information and communications technology (ICT), but the ICT industry is currently stagnant and facing many national and social challenges such as COVID-19 and economic polarization. To break through this stagnation and drive new national growth, the Korean government is now promoting the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Korea Agenda and has announced the National Strategy for AI, which contains its vision for the upcoming AI era. ETRI, as the national AI research institute for creating a better tomorrow, has set strategic goals for the AI research and development plan and is working on its strategy to realize AI. In this keynote presentation, Dr. Sang-Kyu Park will introduce the technology strategies for x + AI that ETRI is pursuing. In particular, the recent representative research achievements such as Exobrain (using AI in language processing to assist humans in intellectual labor areas such as finance and law), Genie Talk (a world-class Korean speech recognition engine and multi-interpretation system), and Aldebaran (a processor chip with nine brains for unmanned autonomous vehicles) will be presented.

Sang-Kyu Park received his BS degree in computer engineering from Seoul National University. He earned his MS and PhD degrees in computer science from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). He has over 30 years of experience in software research and development since joining ETRI in 1987. He has been involved in developing the operating system of the medium-sized computer system TiCOM and artificial intelligence for automatic interpretation and knowledge mining. As the leader of ETRI’s artificial intelligence research division, he has overseen all research and development related to Genie Talk and Exobrain. He has served as the executive vice president of ETRI since July, 2019. He received the 2015 Jinbo Medal, awarded by the Republic of Korea, for his outstanding contributions to the advancement of science and technology.
